Tropenchirurgic is not our Chirurgic in the tropics. Tropical surgery is the surgical that is based on the respective local and regional peculiarities in the countries of the Driuco world - these are now material, personal or microdizine in nature. In order to take account of these special features, it was decided on 21. and March 22, 1992 organized the 1st Tropical Surgery Symposium in Vim. Fortunately, we were able to recruit speakers who excel in tropical medicine and tropical surgery experience. In this introductory section, the medical and socio-economic significance of the surgical environment in the tropics is discussed. Ocr Obcrsichtsarticle by S. F. Ellis from Ghana has been deliberately left in its original form. The other interesting and practical bcitrage offers an up-to-date and well-rounded overview of two important topics with which surgical colleagues in the tropics are confronted: surgery and AIDS and fracture treatment. Knowledge of the biological and epidemiological basis of HI V infection is a prerequisite for adiiquale tropical surgery work. Valuable practical advice on hygiene measures in the surgical field and on transfusion medicine was given by B. Köhler and H. Jäger after their respective experiences in Tanzania and Zaire. Further practice-oriented information can also be requested from the WHO (WHO's Global Program on AIDS and Global Blood Safety Initiative; CH-1211 Geneva 27 - Switzerland). Behavioural rules after contact with infectious material are then given by L. Gürtler.
