The monograph by M. HOCHREIN, which is presented here to the experts, is not alone, and not even primarily, a summary of the entire knowledge of the physiology and pathology of the coronary circulation. The work and views of other researchers are taken into account in detail. However, I see the main value of this work less in the critical discussion of other people's achievements than in the reproduction of the author's own investigations. Ever since I had dealt with problems of coronary physiology and pathology more than 20 years ago with my talented colleague ALFRED ZAHN, who had remained in the war, these questions have not left me. The great frequency of coronary artery diseases among the patients of my present sphere of activity now gave further stimulation to pursue old thoughts. My senior physician MAX HOCHREIN has made valuable contributions to coronary physiology and clinic for years with excellent experimental and clinical methodology. These investigations, which attack the whole complex of questions which are so important to us physicians from the most diverse angles, gain value and significance because they are carried out with a methodology which, far more than was possible only a few years ago, fulfils the requirement which makes such research all the more valuable for the clinician: namely, to carry out the experiment under conditions: which correspond to the conditions in the living organism.
