The Bicycle Accident by D Otte
Accidents involving cyclists have increased significantly in the last 10 years. However, the focus of scientific traffic accident research has been on other areas: the detection of specific injuries and injury patterns, including their causes and the resulting consequences, for the active and passive protection of motorised two-wheeler users, car occupants and pedestrians. It is therefore highly noteworthy that the authors have presented for the first time a comprehensive, multidisciplinary research report on bicycle accidents. The findings are based on an accident data collection as part of a long-term research project of the Federal Institute for Highways, in which interdisciplinary accident research is carried out by motor vehicle engineers and trauma surgeons directly at the scene of the accident and accident reconstructions and accident analyses are developed with modern examination methods according to guidelines for experts. It can be postulated with conviction that there are currently no more detailed figures and results on the accident occurrence of cyclists. The research report - also intended as a reference work - is therefore recommendable and highly topical for traumatologists, traffic physicians, traffic engineers, vehicle designers, medical-technical experts and forensic scientists as well as for traffic planners and traffic psychologists.
