This book is intended for the surgical nurse. It is not intended to constitute an introduction to the nursing profession, but it presupposes the knowledge of general nursing which the nurse had to demonstrate in the examination in order to obtain the state licence to practise medicine. During her short year of training, the sister must make an extensive subject matter her own, in addition to the unavoidable excitement of her hitherto unaccustomed profession - and when, after passing her exam, she looks over what she has learned, the conscientious sister will soon find out that she has basically gained nothing more than a general view of the wide field of nursing. She remarks that if she now wants to devote herself to a special field that appeals to her, such as surgical nursing or work in the operating theatre, she lacks much of the knowledge that the doctor demands of an understanding nurse. The sister's actual special training does not begin until after she has passed her state examination.
