a) Task and plan of the presentation. The special investigation of the machinery of the body must proceed from the observation of the anatomical structure of the skeleton and its junctures. In particular, the shape and strength ratios of the skeletal stems and the elements connecting them must be taken into account. This gives an insight into the possibilities of changing the shape of the skeletal limbs and changing their position in the junctures, in so far as this change can be caused by the forces in question without permanent damage to the apparatus (kinematics). This is to be followed by the investigation of the forces which are available for the determination of the junctures and for the movement in them, especially of the muscles. The last question is that of the positions and movements which actually occur in life, and of the nature of the co-operation of the external and internal forces in each particular case of the determination and movement of the articulated system. As long as it is only a matter of the anatomical structure and the possibilities of movement, the examination can begin in any way with the individual skeletal stems and junctures and from there continue to the examination of the combinations of movements. But as soon as the forces actually acting come into question, a real advance in knowledge in general cannot be achieved if the relations of the individual skeletal structure and the individual junction are considered only for themselves and not within the framework of the equilibrium or motion conditions of the whole system.| ISBN 13 | 9783642473012 |
