Surgical Forum '83 for Experimental and Clinical Research by G Uhlschmid
Again, the "Surgical Forum" is the platform for the exchange of ideas between surgeons and surgical research groups. The topics have remained the same as in previous years with two changes. Only the field of pre- and postoperative therapy has been extended to the field of pre- and postoperative pathophysiology. A new theme has been chosen by the Scientific Committee, "Organ replacement and biomechanical support", because it is precisely in this area that interesting new surgical developments are emerging. The Scientific Advisory Board of the Forum regrets the large number of unaccepted contributions. As in the last 11 years, out of over 200 registrations, only just under 30% could be accepted into the programme. In many cases, the reason for this was a lack of form and content. Very often, however, the limited presentation time for the congress forced very strict standards to be applied to the selection. The "Chirurgische Mitteilungen" (Issue 2-1983) describes the development of the Surgical Forum. A more or less constant high consideration of the various topics has been demonstrated in recent years. While there is an increasing trend for gastroenterological surgery, registrations for traumatology, liver-bile-pancreas, wound healing and shock remained constant. The most significant upward trend is shown in oncology. The decline in endocrine issues should draw attention to the fact that work in this area can certainly continue to be very fruitful in the future.
