Studies on the Personality and Fate of Registered Prostitutes by Kurt Schneider
The investigations on which these studies are based fall into the period from January 1913 to May 1914. They concern patients in the prostitute department of the current University Clinic for Skin Patients in Cologne and were made possible by the goodwill of the director of the clinic, Professor Dr. Zinsser. In detail, I proceeded as follows: I asked the clinic to give me the names of the registered prostitutes who had been admitted to compulsory treatment and who had been newly admitted and went with the list to the Royal Police Presidium, which supported my work by making the police files available to me and also otherwise helped me by advising me on police technical questions. I took the files of those prostitutes who had just been admitted and learned from them, apart from the personal details and the time of the subjection to moral control, many very important things. They always contained a list of penalties that had regularly been requested before or immediately after the allegation. In addition, it usually contained reports from the local authorities about past lives and family circumstances and often reports from organs of care that had previously dealt with the girls. In the end, they contained a corresponding receipt for each arrest for violation of the morality police, as well as evidence of hospitalization, changes of residence and often numerous letters from the girl, usually requesting exemption from the doctor's control or mailing.
