In the last 25 years, the wrong impression may have arisen, since with stable osteosynthesis and functional follow-up treatment in the sense of the AO, conservative bone fracture treatment is only occasionally appropriate. In reality, the Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery of the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen observes clear guidelines for which fractures require surgical treatment and which require conservative treatment. Of course, there are deviations from these guidelines in one direction or the other, depending on which patient has which fracture and what the accompanying circumstances are. In numerical terms, 85% of the shaft fractures in children and 40% of the adult fractures are treated conservatively at our clinic. In the present book, Dr. F. Freuler, Dr. U. Wiedmer and Mr. D. Bianchini, plaster nurses, have presented in a second edition those measures that either serve for conservative treatment or complement surgical care. These are extensions, fixations, plaster splints and plaster composites of the conventional type, in the current edition taking into account the new plastic composites and functional composites (taping). The authors have the merit of having compiled numerous measures and tricks. The healing result of both conservative and surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries depends to a large extent on the mastery of these measures.
