Physical Treatment of Chronic Heart Disease by Th Schott
It may well be useful to precede the discussion of the treatment of chronic heart diseases with a brief reflection on the present state of research in the field of anatomy and physiology of the heart. The last few decades in particular have brought about a strong change of views here. Whereas in the past the nerve influences on the movement of the heart were assigned the greater part, at the end of the last century there came a time when the whole activity of the heart, both the pressure and the suction effect of the heart, was regarded as a purely muscular one, and the automatism of the heart was attributed solely to the myogenic activity. It was especially the developmental discoveries of His and his students that had led to this view. He found that the heart tube of the chicken embryo was already showing movement before nerve elements could be detected in it. Even at a later stage of development, only sensitive nerves were found, which grew out of the sympathetic nervous system into the muscles. Motor nerve fibers could not be found at this stage of development at that time. The Gangliaen of the heart were also considered to be of a purely sensitive nature. The investigations of Keith coincided with the purely myogenic theorie, who found muscle cells near the junction of the inferior vena cava in the right atrium. This view was further understood. The discovery of His's bundle and Tawara's knot. Thus the complete connection between the protrusions and ventricles was proved, and thus fell a main objection which the proponents of the neurogenic theory had hitherto made.| ISBN 13 | 9783642525254 |
