In view of this importance of pain for the doctor, it is surprising, since pain has so far had little weight in medical studies. This deficiency is often only recognised by the doctor during practical work when he realises that although pain was discussed in several clinical subjects during his studies, he did not bring a concept for pain diagnosis and pain therapy from the university that would be useful for practice. Based on this insight, we try to provide instructions for a teaching unit on pain in medical studies with this book. According to this proposal, the medical student should be offered an interdisciplinary lecture series during one semester in the clinical part of his studies. The aim of the course is to provide the student with a coherent picture of pain and pain treatment from the point of view of the relevant theoretical and clinical subjects.
