Today, coronary heart disease has become the most common directly life-threatening disease in industrialized countries. The underlying procele3 of stenosing atheromatosis remains asymptomatic for many years. Even if the disease is occasionally detected by a stress electrocardiogram, myocardial infarction or angina pectoris are usually the first signs of this disease. 1m further course of the disease mainly influences the prognosis of heart failure and the coloring3 of stenoses in the coronary system. Until a few years ago, it had only been possible to show changes in the coronary folds by means of the relatively complex left heart catheter examination, or to quantitatively record the picture of heart failure by determining volumes, expulsion fractures and pressures. With the introduction of nuclear medicine methods, we can now detect these two changes that are essential for coronary heart disease non-invasively. With thallium scintigraphy, it has become possible to visualize critical stenosis and, in addition to the stress electrocardiogram, to define its localization and extent. Radionuclide ventriculography makes it possible to directly measure the left ventricular expulsion fraction, the most important single parameter for determining cardiac function, in a bloodless way.
