There are so many substances sailing under the flag of new medicines, some of which are beyond doubt, some of which are doubtful, that it is not possible to give a brief definition of this term, which at the same time encompasses everything that belongs here. I shall therefore confine myself to giving you what new medicines are to be discussed in this book. The medicines to be dealt with here are all organic in nature, since the inorganic bodies play only a minor role in the modern drug movement. They are divided into two departments. The first and larger comprises mainly artificially produced chemical individuals, the second exclusively mixtures, namely organotherapeutic preparations and I-Ieilsera, bacterial toxin preparations, nutrients, then some substances such as ichthyol and lanolin, which cannot be classified in a definite group. But what characterises these medicines as new? Do the new medicines differ from the old ones only in that they appeared later than the former, or are the new medicines also based on new ideas? The latter applies to the majority of the substances to be dealt with here, e.g. to the I-Ieilsera. The majority of the chemical individuals to be discussed also owe their existence to a new epoch in the therapeutic use of chemicals.
