This book is an example of interdisciplinary medical-psychological cooperation in research and practice, for which the term behavioral medicine is also becoming common in the German-speaking world. The present text was initially intended to be a practical manual for physicians and psychologists on the treatment of migraine headache by behavioral modification. It has become more than that: a handbook of migraine, in which previous theories and findings on etiology, pathogenesis and clinic, previous experiences and attempted techniques for the diagnosis and therapy of migraine are presented and critically evaluated. The explanations show the necessity and the possibility of using both medical and psychological examination and treatment procedures for predominantly psychophysiologically explainable complaints and disorders, furthermore how important and meaningful it is to conduct psychological research and physiological research as an integrating psychophysiological science. The psychological treatment procedures for migraine headache presented in this book were largely developed and tested in a research project of the Priority Programme Behavioural Modification of the German Research Foundation in cooperation with the Departments of Clinical and Physiological Psychology at the University of Tiibingen and the Department of Neuropsychology and Neurological Polyclinic at the University of Tiibingen. The authors are physicians and clinical psychologists from the two institutions and other domestic and foreign research groups.
