Since the detection of elevated measles antibodies in multiple sclerosis patients by ADAMS and IMAGAWA in 1962, the significance of ubiquitous viral infections occurring in an early period of life has remained a central problem in research into the causes of multiple sclerosis (MS). ERNST KUWERT was one of the first researchers to tackle this question seriously, and there is hardly anyone who has pursued it with comparable consistency and perseverance. The large number of studies on the question of measles and MS, which cover a wide range of serological and immunological methods, from statistical surveys to the detection of specific viral nucleic acids, resulted in divergences that still exist. However, a well-founded result is emerging: the frequency of higher titers in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid against measles than against other viral infections and an increase in the titer in the acute stage of MS. Together with one of his closest collaborators, P. G. HΓHER, KUWERT has compiled the extensive results of many years of study in the book Measles and Multiple Sclerosis, a Serological Analysis. On the basis of the results of investigations on 1275 test subjects using various test systems and the antigens of 21 virus species, it was shown that increased titers against different types of virus can occur in MS, but that only measles virus antibodies increase in the course of MS and that antibodies against nucleoproteins and hemolysine in particular characterize the acute phase of this disease.| ISBN 13 | 9783642706639 |
