In memoriam Karl Heinrich Bauer by Fritz Linder
On September 26, 1990, the great physician and scientist Karl Heinrich Bauer would have been one hundred years old. A scientific symposium was held in the newly built auditorium of the German Cancer Research Center, which was initiated by Bauer. The University of Heidelberg, Bauer's former Surgical Clinic, the German Society of Surgery and the Association for the Promotion of Cancer Research in Germany, which was founded by Bauer, participated in this project. The event took place in stages: Academic greetings, introduced by the Rector of the University of Heidelberg, Magnificence Prof. Volker Sellin, lectures on the characterization of the deceased as a teacher, researcher and physician, the awarding of the K. H. Bauer Memorial Prize to two deserving young researchers by the President of the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernhard Timm, and finally by ceremonial lectures on current tumor surgery and the state of Bauer's mutation theory in the Lichte moderner Genpathologie. From the sum of what was presented, presented not without criticism, but also understood, it was once again clear what an extraordinary talent distinguished Bauer. Seldom are the cardinal virtues of a scholar - originality, ingenuity, consistent pursuit of goals once correctly recognized, indefatigable diligence - developed in such complete differentiation as in this unusual man, whose personality influenced generations of physicians and cancer researchers13. The compilation hereby presented to the public is concluded by a K. H.
