We count metaplasia and tissue disorders among the differentiation disorders. If, therefore, we want to attempt a scientific analysis of these pathological phenomena, the absolutely necessary prerequisite for this is the knowledge of the factors which govern the normal process of development, the normal differentiations of the body tissues. We are therefore compelled, if we want to place ourselves on a sufficiently secure and critically sound ground in the following, to take a position on a number of the fundamental questions of the problem of development and differentiation. If there were even a certain agreement in research and literature on these basic questions, we could be brief and simply refer to presentations of this kind on which we want to take as a basis. Unfortunately, there can be no question of such a consensus today, and we shall have to discuss in a moment that the greatest conceivable differences prevail in the assessment of these fundamental problems, and that in particular the various basic concepts, which we are also forced to apply in the following, are interpreted and applied in very different ways. It is therefore necessary, in order to be properly understood at all, to first define and briefly explain the point of view on which we stand.
