The main impetus for this development, at least in the German-speaking world, was the Thalidomide disaster (1959-1962), in the course of which an extremely large number of children were born with damage to the upper limbs. The consistently severe, and also very rare deformities brought with them a plethora of problems and thus posed a great challenge to all those who deal with the treatment of such miformations. Many impulses emanated from here, which met with hand surgery, which was in the process of expanding, and continued to have an effect on the entire field of hand malformations, with which orthopaedics in particular has always felt particularly closely connected. The idea and preparatory work for the present atlas date back to 1964. Since then, almost all operations on co-formed hands have been systematically recorded: from skin incision to wound closure, photographed and regularly checked. The atlas is based on experience of more than a thousand of its own interventions. The book is written from practice for practice; it would like to provide those seeking hand surgery advice with a decision-making aid for their procedure and the most comprehensive, practical surgical instructions possible. This intention resulted in certain principles for the compilation and construction of the atlas: only surgical methods that have proven themselves in our country should be included.
