The successes of scientific medicine have considerably increased the average life expectancy in the industrialized countries during the last century. For the individual, the ageing process is thus becoming increasingly important because there is a prospect that he will live a considerable proportion of his time at an advanced age. In addition, medical progress has decisively reshaped the age pyramid of the population of modern industrial countries and thus gained socio-political significance. While, for example, at the turn of the century the proportion of young people up to 20 years of age was 46% and those over 60 years of age 7%, it is to be expected that in 1975 the group of young people will have fallen below 30% and the group of old people, on the other hand, will have risen to 20%, although this estimate does not even take into account the effect of the pill, which is to be estimated to be considerable. This will further increase the medical, economic, social and political significance of geriatric problems for the community. Ageing problems are by no means limited to medical science, and geriatrics is even less to be regarded as a special medical specialty. Rather, geriatric aspects must be taken into account in many, if not all, medical disciplines and their problems must also be dealt with in non-medical disciplines.
