VI as a principle of arrangement, similar to what BRAUS, who was so early torn from us, tried to do in his book of anatomy, independently of us. As our plan of division shows, however, the detachment from morphological principles does not yet seem to us to be completely possible, or even correct everywhere. The first 14 volumes, which are devoted to the discussion of the individual functions, will be followed by 3 volumes, to which we have given the heading Correlations. Here, in the most diverse fields, the connection of the individual organs and their function to the gross functional units that govern the life of the individual is to be synthetically combined. While on the one hand we tear the organism to pieces, as it were, and strive to fathom the phenomena in each individual part in a specialized way, here the attempt is made to assemble the whole from the building blocks. In science, too, our time wants to penetrate through alien - today as always - unavoidable specialism to the general whole. It was impossible for a single person to publish a handbook in the sense indicated, and so the original one editor became four, who took on the task, although it seemed almost impossible to cope with it.
