In the last two decades, practical medicine has been given its curative function to a greater extent than former tasks, which are grouped together under the term preventive health care. This development is closely related to the change in the disease panorama. In the economically highly developed countries, the number of cases caused by infectious diseases has been greatly reduced, but on the other hand, the various varieties of arteriosclerosis, certain tumour diseases and so-called functional syndromes have taken on the character of mass phenomena. Systematic epidemiological studies have led to the concept of risk factors, i.e. certain exogenous or endogenous factors, the elimination of which ideally avoids the manifestation of a disease or becomes manifest later in life or in a milder form. These aspects have great socio-economic and socio-medical significance, as can be seen from all the statistics on the cause of incapacity for work and retirement, as well as the proportion of various diseases in total mortality.
