It is customary to divide the field of paediatrics, which embraces human physiology and pathology from the day of birth to the completion of sexual development, into several age periods according to the various stages of development. This grouping is not intended to create various special medical specialties; rather, it takes place in the interest of clarity and results quite logically from the differences in physical and mental development, the general dietary and hygienic measures during the individual periods of life, from the differences in the nature, occurrence and course of pathological processes. Within that period which is called the age of infants, and which is limited by the completion of the first year of life, the very first days and weeks of life again occupy a certain special position, which justifies it, since they are specially emphasized from the infant period as that of the newborn. Just as the different periods of childhood generally flow into each other without sharp boundaries, so also the period during which a child is called newborn is only very vaguely demarcated from the rest of the age of adolescence.
