Compression Syndromes of Peripheral Nerves by Wolfgang Tackmann
Compression syndromes of individual peripheral nerves were already known in the middle of the last century. Paget (1853) is credited with the first communication of carpal tunnel syndrome. Hunt (1908) was probably the first to draw attention to the compression of the median nerve and ulnar nerve as a possible cause of atrophy of the intrinsic hand muscles. A pseudoneuroma proximal of the Lig. carpi transversum and a flattening of the median nerve under this structure was observed by Marie and Foix (1913) during an autopsy. These authors were probably the first to draw attention to the possibility that the splitting of the Lig. carpi transversum the compression can be fixed. However, it took another 20 years before Learmonth successfully performed this operation on a 71-year-old patient in 1933. Compression damage of the ulnar nerve as a result of an elbow joint fracture was described in 1878 by Panas, later by Mouchet (1898). Blattmann (1851) and Zuckerkandl (1880) had pointed out the dislocation as a possible cause. Ulnar compressions in the wrist and hand area and the pathogenetic relationships between certain occupational activities (glassblowers, glass cutters, diamond cutters, watchmakers, engravers, tailors) and the occurrence of atrophy of the small hand muscles supplied by the ulnar nerve have also been known for a long time. Compression syndromes of the nerves of the lower extremities have also been known for a long time. Hoadley (1893), for example, considered a pseudoneuroma in Morton's metatarsalgia to be a possible cause of the symptoms. However, this description was forgotten until it was rediscovered in 1940 by Betts, who successfully treated the pain by resection Morton's neuroma.| ISBN 13 | 9783642717697 |
