The extraordinarily large increase in knowledge since the first edition of this handbook about 70 years ago is documented in the volumes available here, which present the field of clinical osteology in a representative form. The division into a more theoretical and a more clinical part seemed necessary for two reasons: First, a broad knowledge of the physiological basics is required today for the understanding of the pathophysiology of the individual clinical pictures. So it seemed advisable to focus on the current state of endocrinological research in this area and to present the modern ideas of bone remodeling and calcium phosphate metabolism. Secondly, there are now a large number of osteological examination methods which - in order to avoid repetition in the treatment of the individual clinical pictures - have also been placed before the clinic.
