BRCA - Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer by Ansgar Gerhardus
In Germany, 47,500 women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and 10,000 women with ovarian cancer. These are the most common cancers in women. Some of these cases are due to known inherited genetic defects (BRCA 1 and BRCA 2, mutations occur in about 115,000 women). Women with these genetic defects have a very high risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer at a young age. You also have a high risk of recurrence.
An interdisciplinary team of authors has prepared a so-called "Health Technology Assessment" for the diagnosis and advice of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer for the Federal Association of AOK. The book offers a compact overview of:
- genetic counselling
- the various molecular genetic test methods
- their diagnostic accuracy and reliability and
- the costs
It is to serve as the basis for all further test programs for hereditary cancers to be introduced in Germany.
