Anti-biotics are, according to the composition of the word, biogenic substances directed against life. The double connection with life - formed by living beings, directed against living beings - is expected to provide new insights into what we scientifically call life. To pursue these possibilities is the task of the present sketches. Sketches, because they are hastily thrown, preliminary developments, all of which bear the marks of a personal point of view and do not claim to be complete. The medical aspects have been deliberately placed in favour of the general biological aspects. There is currently no shortage of illustrations of the medical side of antibiotics, the general biological side has so far been neglected. I am very grateful to my team colleagues Dr. W. KELLER-SCHIERLEIN and Dr. R. HUTTER, who helped to lay the foundation for these sketches through their cooperation and their constant willingness to respond to new ideas.
