This book is aimed at aIle A. doctors who have to do with children, be it in clinics, consultations or social welfare. With a thorough consideration of the newborn, it hopes to serve the obstetrician as well. Finally, it also wants to impart to the theoretical biologist the knowledge of the peculiarities of the child at its various stages of development, which the child can less and less do without. The morphology and anatomy of the child are described in great detail in the Handbook of the Anatomy of the Child (edited by PETER, WETZEL, HEIDERICH), which is about to be concluded. Here, morphological and anatomical aspects are dealt with only to the extent that they have physiological or clinical interest, i.e. especially in the first two chapters. In the first place, the functions of the child's organism are described, whereby knowledge of the general physiology and the conditions of adults is generally assumed to be known. The selection of the material was made based on the needs of the clinician. The book pursues three goals. In view of the fact that the literature has grown more and more, especially in the last 10 years, the biological data on the normal child at all stages of development, which are scattered in numerous summary works on the various sub-fields and in countless individual works, are to be collected and presented in a book for reference.
