The great frequency of psychiatric illnesses in the population has led in recent years to many diagnostic and therapeutic tasks of the psychiatrist being introduced into the practice of general physicians and internists. This development is also reflected in the considerable increase in the use of psychotropic drugs, in particular benzodiazepine tranquilizers and antidepressants, within psychiatric practice. Experience from training events shows that there are considerable uncertainties and information requirements in some areas of psychotropic drug therapy and the treatment of depression. The aim of the 1st Psychiatric Talks at the Gasteig was to address these current problems in particular, and to be able to formulate practicable therapy recommendations after an extensive expert discussion. The psychiatrists invited to this expert discussion were first asked to make a short statement on various questions. In the ensuing detailed discussion, a consensus was to be reached regarding the therapy recommendations passed on to the general practitioner and internist. An auditorium was dispensed with in order to ensure the freest and most open discussion possible. The complexity of the matter meant that it was not possible to reach agreement on all the recommended treatment strategies.
