In 1912, at a meeting in Berne between Dr. FERDINAND SPRINGER and myself, it was decided to publish a new, really quite comprehensive handbook on skin diseases. Even then, some of its parts of the lVIRACEK work were outdated and it was relatively poor in illustration material, which was particularly noticeable in comparison with the Pratique dermatologique. At that time I immediately turned to ALBERT NEISSER, with whom such an undertaking had already been discussed in many conversations for a long time. He agreed and began the preparations with all his warmth and energy. On the occasion of one of his visits to Bern, vVir worked out the import and distribution; in the first half of 1914 we were finished with all the essentials. The numerous excellent employees could have started their work if the outbreak of the war had not first set a goal for all such work. The war was over - just in the middle of its course ALBERT NEISSER had departed from us. Initially, insurmountable obstacles stood in the way of the resumption of the large enterprise. In January 1922, Dr. Springer believed that the time had come to get back to work. In preliminary inquiries, we were mostly met with joyful approval. So I began again with the preparatory work - now without being able to rely on NEISSER's experience, his organizational talent, his energy.
